AP Photo Emphasis Assignment #3: Create a Book Cover Illustration and Concentration 1-4 due Thursday, 3-3-16.

2/27/2016

PictureThe Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark

(100 points) Think of a book you have read.  Create a cover for the book that emphasizes something important that happens in the story.  Make sure all of your choices reflect the story.  In my example below, the somber black and gray colors relect the dark nature of the story of Hamlet, and the floating figure (Ophelia) represents the many characters who die in this play.

You may create your book cover by drawing in Photoshop, or you may use one or more of your own photos as part of your design.  The artwork must be your own, and you must include the title of the book and the name of the author.  [File>new>9” high, 6” wide>300 resolution/72 for uploading; save as a tiff while you are working, and upload the 72 as a jpeg].

Finally, write a short summary of the book that would go on the back cover.  For my book it would be : Prince
Hamlet is depressed. Having been summoned home to Denmark from school in Germany to attend his father's funeral, he is shocked to find his mother Gertrude already remarried. The Queen has wed Hamlet's Uncle Claudius, the dead king's brother. To Hamlet, the marriage is "foul incest."
Submit cover and summary to your One Drive.  Thank you!

AP Photo Emphasis Assignment #2: Tiny Illustrations       Due Thursday, 2-25-16

2/22/2016

Students, this week you will create five tiny works of art as you respond to the prompts below.  As we have done in the past weeks, you will need to create a Word document in your OneDrive account and paste in the prompts you will be using.  Create the artwork in Photoshop (file>new>4 x 4 inches, 180 resolution), and upload the images to fit with your chosen prompt.  Be creative (imagine something no one else would think of OR think of something you have seen but add some imaginative changes) and use any of the Photoshop tools you have learned or want to try to make an interesting artwork.

1. In a design composed of horizontal lines, the vertical line becomes the focal point.

2. A square stands out from a group of circles or organic shapes.

3. The physically or visually heavier element or piece commands more attention.

4. A splash of color or a strong change in value in an otherwise gray piece will draw the eye.

5. A perfectly symmetrical piece may have no focal point because each element is equally emphasized.

6. Radial balance generally draws the eye first to the central point in the design.

7. A part of the design that is isolated from other parts can become a focal point.

8. The eye is naturally drawn to a point in or near the center of a page, giving elements in that area perceived importance.

9. Repeating an image or a word can establish its importance.

10. Set words or phrases in a contrasting bold type or italics to give them emphasis.

11. Use white space to isolate elements and give them emphasis.

AP Photo students, so far we have studied the following Principles of Design: Balance, Unity, and Contrast. The Principles of Design are how we organize the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Space, Color, Texture, and Value) in our artworks. Now we will turn to another Principle of Design, Emphasis.  Copy the questions below into a OneDrive document, and answer them.  Due Thursday, 2-18-16.

1. Write an art-related definition for emphasis.

2. List three ways artists can achieve emphasis in an artwork.

3. Talk with students at your table and decide what the artist is emphasizing in Figure 1 above. Write your common answer here.

4. In Figure 2, what is emphasized by this artist and what do you think it means?

5. Emphasis can be placing special significance on something. Describe something you have placed special significance on.
